About

GEORGIA SHACKLETON

Georgia works with fiddle, voice, tenor guitar and drones to create crisp arrangements of old songs, and new compositions. Georgia is a critically acclaimed song writer, with self penned songs and traditional re-workings achieving national radio play on BBC radio 2, BBC radio 4, and a BBC 3 live session.

Georgia takes great influence from the traditional singers of the East of England such as Harry Cox, Walter Pardon and Phoebe Smith. Traditional material she performs often stems from her native East Anglia and her own compositions are often inspired by stories from the region and the areas unique, compelling landscape. Her solo album, ‘Harry’s Seagull’ is a celebration of East Anglian traditional music. The album is named after a tune she wrote and dedicated to Harry Cox, after the touching discovery that he kept a wounded seagull as a pet for a period of time.

THEATRE

Georgia recently collaborated with High Tide Theatre, as composer and musical director. Together they created a piece of environmentally conscious theatre which toured East of England for 4 weeks, finishing with 3 performances at the iconic Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

"Beyond the familiar ghost-story tropes, the stories are anchored in relatable pain and anguish. Loss, fear and anger are churned up to supernatural proportions through imaginative text and articulate performances, which bind the pieces together" - ★★★ - The Stage

"A symphony of storytelling and folk melody. In the softly illuminated auditorium of Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, with a violin accompaniment, a Peregrine Falcon takes centre stage, serving as the narrator for three haunting tales set in the mystical landscapes of East Anglia. This region of the country, with its pre-Christian temples, Viking stories, and vast beaches, has inspired the likes of M.R. James, and in 2023, three gifted writers and a songwriter joined forces to craft an intimate evening of modern ghost stories in Ipswich and its surroundings. The result? A captivating sensory experience, an evening of female-centred ghost encounters: Ghost Stories by Candlelight." ★★★★ - West End Evenings

"Georgia Shackleton's 'Curse of the Fen' feels perfectly uneasy and gives a certain texture to the performance" ★★★★ - Theatre and Tonic

A version of the stage play adapted and recorded for audio.

In this episode of The Writing Life podcast, Holly is joined by Colchester-based playwright and HighTide/Peggy Ramsay Foundation writer in residence Nicola Werenowska and Norwich-based folk musician Georgia Shackleton to discuss writing for performance.

Nicola and Georgia were central to the development of Suffolk-based theatre company HighTide’s touring show Ghost Stories by Candlelight, which we were lucky enough to host at Dragon Hall last autumn. Ghost Stories by Candlelight was a brand new commission that brought together stories, music and song to tell a set of chilling, contemporary ghost stories that celebrate the people, landscape and fragile natural world of East Anglia… And we are very excited to announce that HighTide will return to Dragon Hall as part of a new tour in autumn 2024.

Together, Holly, Nicola and Georgia discuss the process of writing collectively, and the particular characteristics of ghost stories. They also touch on the representation of different voices and identities in the performance world, and the importance of place in their writing.
